The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Trophy
The Hobey Baker Memorial Award, created in 1981, is given annually to the outstanding collegiate hockey player who epitomizes the characteristics of Hobey Baker’s hockey skills, leadership, character, sportsmanship and scholastic achievement.
The award is named in honor of Hobart Amory Hare Baker, Princeton class of 1914, renowned as one of the finest examples of a true sportsman that America has ever produced. Although he was considered the best amateur hockey player in the United States in his era, it was his qualities of character and sportsmanship that have caused him to be remembered and honored to this day. He died in service to his country during World War I at the age of 26. The trophy itself is a classic sculpture of a skater stopping quickly, sending ice shavings flying, his stick and skates forming a three-point base. It is 40 pounds of bronze and clear, etched acrylic, standing 16 inches high, detailed down to a stitched jersey and lettered stick. Each winner is presented a trophy as well as the school he represents.
