Choosing a Major

Selecting a major – or not
Some seniors have known for quite some time what they want to major in. Others are not even sure they want to go to college.

Selecting a major is similar to selecting a career. Seniors need to assess their interests, skills and the potential career opportunities. Selecting a major can seem like a life long commitment. It is good to remember that seniors have the freedom to change their major at a later date.

Start by looking at interests and passions. Click here to see a full list of resources and advice to determine what interests your senior.

What type of major is right for you?
Many majors presume you will pursue a career in the field. For example, students who major in accounting, computer science, or engineering are expecting to become accountants, computer programmers and engineers. Many students are intimidated to declare this type of major. It is such a life long commitment.

There are many liberal arts majors that lend themselves to a broad range of fields. If it is not necessary to declare a major during the application process, then you may not want to do so. Many students discover what they are interested in at college only after being exposed to many new subjects.
