Living Arrangements
Staying at home? Time to revisit agreements
The next big decision after deciding to go to work after high school
is where to live. If your senior decides to live at home, there are a few things
the whole family should discuss before graduation day. Many times families
want to revisit house rules once the senior is out of school. Discuss your
expectations of each other.
Is your senior going to be moving out on their own?
Often graduates share a place with a roommate. Selecting a roommate
is sometimes tough. If you plan to live with a buddy, you and your roommate
or roommates should discuss a few important subjects that will make living
together much easier:
-
The lease: All roommates need to sign the lease. A lease makes you
all responsible for paying rent and caring for the apartment. Having
everyone on the lease is the easiest way to avoid any money and
responsibility disputes.
- Sharing the expenses: Sharing expenses is common.
Maybe each roommate
takes responsibility for different utilities/services. Whoever’s
name is on the account will be held responsible for payment if there
is ever a
dispute. Plus, if one roommate needs/wants to move out, what is their
obligation?
- Do you and your roommate(s) agree on the appearance of
the place? Neat vs not-so-neat?
- Are friends allowed to spend the
night? How often?
- Will smoking and alcohol be allowed?
- Are pets allowed?
- Can they share an Internet service/phone line?
