Quick Guide to Need-Based Financial Aid

<<..Back to "Financial Aid"

Financial aid isn't just for those who can't afford the full cost of college. Many middle-class families are eligible for some need-based aid. Here are the basic steps to applying for need-based aid. Click here for a quick guide to applying for merit-based aid.

  1. Before you jump in, learn about the different types of aid at www.finaid.org.
  2. Decide how much your family can contribute to the cost of college. The financial calculators at www.finaid.org/calculators can help you make a preliminary estimate. Then meet with your guidance counselor to discuss the most suitable financing options and programs.
  3. Narrow your list of colleges. The types of financial aid, application processes and deadlines can vary by school, so focus on what your colleges require.
  4. Gather and review the information for each aid program.
  5. Find out if any of your colleges require the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile. If so, submit it in the fall at the same time as your application for admission. Many private colleges use the Profile to supplement other forms when awarding nonfederal student aid.
  6. Complete any other applications for state aid, private scholarships, and/or college-specific aid. The deadlines are often earlier than for federal aid.
  7. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, and submit it after January 1st. The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal student aid programs, as well as for many state and college-specific programs. For information, visit www.fafsa.ed.gov.
