Jostens Educator Services: Rewarding Academic Achievement.

The academic rally is one of the most important aspects of a successful Renaissance program. The public platform provides the perfect opportunity to promote your Renaissance program while recognizing and rewarding student performance in front of the entire school. We've included ideas and academic rally scripts from Renaissance schools and the Jostens Renaissance National Conference Rally. You can use the scripts as they are, of use them as a catalyst for your own creative ideas.

Ram Hunt for Renaissance

Acadiana High School in Lafayette, Louisiana has been a Renaissance school for 20 years. We have successfully put on the academic pep rally for 14 of these years and we went on a search of a unique kind of event to reward our students. We thought of a program that could occur every six weeks, would be in the commons area for ALL of our students to see, and let the students have FUN while being recognized for making the grades. This past six weeks we decided to let the theme be "RAM Hunt for Renaissance" since we are the home of the Wreckin' Ram mascot. The students were encouraged to wear camouflage attire and participate in three different style scavenger hunts to be held during their lunch period. The first hunt had 10 baby pictures of different faculty members on campus and the students had to identify which teacher was in the picture. In the second hunt, the students were given ten clues to guess who the student was on campus entitled "Who is Rambeaux?" The third scavenger hunt was the biggest hit with students forming groups of three per team searching for 10 items within a set limit of time.

Every six weeks there is a new theme with new games, but the students look forward to these six weeks celebration days because they are guaranteed a free lunch will be served (pizza, hamburger, etc. with a soda), fun games with prizes for the winners (gift cards work great!), and music for the entire lunch period. We run the celebration twice, once during each lunch period, so that NO class time is lost in the running of the programs. Our Renaissance committee decided on these celebration days because they do not require as much extensive planning as an academic pep rally and with the expenses that you would spend on one pep rally, you can put on 4-5 six weeks celebration days. Another HUGE benefit to this type of program is that ALL of our students are exposed to the fun! Those students who did not receive a coupon for the free food want to know how they can earn the coupon in the future. Thankfully the number of students who are making the required grade point average has gone up, so we know the program is working!

Tunnel of Wisdom

At a recent outdoor rally we had our cheerleaders make a Run through Banner that is traditionally reserved for Friday night Football games. Only instead of the Football Team running through it, we had all of our 692 Renaissance Card Holders run through a special made Renaissance Banner to begin our Fall Rally! Each cardholder either had on their new Renaissance shirt, their sport jersey, or the club t-shirt. Regardless of what they wore, you had to be a new card holder to run through! Each student had a balloon to represent their level of achievement, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze to release when the run through was complete! This cost nothing except the cost of the balloons and helium and the students loved it!

The second thing we did at our rally was to have every member of our staff on the football field to form the "Tunnel of Wisdom" for the new staff to come through as their name was called over the PA. The ‘veteran" staff was called to the tunnel by the number of years they had worked at our school, with those there the longest at the beginning of the "tunnel". We had some "bricks" (cardboard kind) to give the new staff as they made their way down the tunnel. On the bricks each veteran staff person had written their name and their best advice for success. As the new staff made their way down the tunnel we filled up their bags with the Bricks of Wisdom!

Another idea was the Freeze-Off Contest. We had a cookout for our staff and their family before the rally and right after school. Each department was asked to bring their most favorite home made ice cream in a freezer to be judged as the best. At the judging, departments were not allowed to list the name of their department, only the flavor of their ice cream. Everyone responded great and we had dessert for our cookout! A large piñata of an ice-cream cone was the "trophy"! This built some really good memories and camaraderie among our staff.

We continue to use our "I Inspire" Awards with great success. We have perpetual trophies that are passed from staff person to staff person each rally. Students who earn Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Discount Cards are given the opportunity to write a message about the staffulty who inspires them the most to succeed in school. Votes are tallied by level and announced at the rally! Trophies are given for each level. The messages are presented to not only the winners but to every person who received a nomination. Staffulty talk about this event a lot and really appreciate the comments that are hand written about them by the students.
