| Developing student leaders is a key component of the Jostens Renaissance process. Becoming a leader is not "rocket science," but it does take perseverance, skill building, good listening skills and a positive attitude. It also helps to have the following leadership attributes: a sense of purpose, a passion for inspiring others, self-confidence, an ability to communicate effectively and respect for yourself and others.

| So how can you improve a school's climate? I can tell you that school spirit is not about pompons and pep rallies. It requires a process of connecting the dots. If each group within your school - the skaters, the musicians, the athletes, cooks, custodians, parents, etc. - is a dot, then school spirit is the connections made between those dots. Healthy schools promote connections between groups so that students and staff feel connected.

| Detention and suspension have been the one-two punch of school discipline for decades. They put students on notice, though they don't always improve behavior. Two Renaissance schools have found new ways to improve behavior and create a more positive climate at school.
